Project Overview:
Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) installed a wind turbine generator to provide on-site power to its campus in Buzzards Bay, MA. In addition to the typical benefit of electricity cost savings and the environmental benefits of reduced air emissions, a wind turbine at the academy provides MMA with the opportunity to incorporate wind power generation into its educational curriculum. MMA installed a Vestas V47 wind turbine generator (660kW) on a 50 meter tower. The output of the wind turbine is used to power about 25% of the load at MMA saving taxpayers about $200,000 each year (including REC sales). The system serves as an educational facility to train students on the operation and maintenance of wind turbines as part of the curriculum. Through a formal RFP process, the Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM) and MMA selected Jay Cashman, Inc. for turn-key supply and installation of the turbine. The turn-key cost was $1,344,500.
