The Mass. Manufacturing Community
Responds to COVID-19

MassTech Leads the Work of the Manufacturing Emergency Response Team

The leaders of the Baker-Polito Administration’s Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative including Housing and Economic Development Secretary Mike Kennealy and Mike Tamasi, President and CEO of AccuRounds established the Manufacturing Emergency Response Team (MERT) to assist in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The MERT’s Mission:

To support Massachusetts manufacturers in pivoting their operations to produce needed materials in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the first two months of the pandemic response, the emergency response team included representatives from: Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, Advanced Functional Fabrics of America (AFFOA), MIT, MIT Lincoln Labs, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP), Associated Industries of Massachusetts (AIM), and multiple industry partners.  Many thanks to the experts who tirelessly contributed to the emergency response.

Going forward, Massachusetts continues to support its manufacturers wishing to pivot operations to produce needed materials in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The MassTech Collaborative will continue to oversee efforts in partnership with MassMEP.

    Support provided includes:

    • Ongoing consultation with MassMEP’s manufacturing advisors;
    • Checklists and templates for understanding the readiness of your products for market; and
    • Referrals to testing resources for products requiring testing for compliance purposes.

If you are a Massachusetts manufacturer and your organization is interested in joining the effort, please fill out the form below and an MERT member will reach out.

    • Only one response per organization should be submitted.
    • Please provide a central contact for follow up by a MERT team member. For your convenience, there is space provided for additional contact information.

In addition, from time to time there is grant funding available to further support Massachusetts manufacturers in pivoting their operations to produce needed materials in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more here.

Massachusetts COVID-19 Regulatory & Testing Assistance

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has an urgent need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers and ventilators. Hospital and health networks fighting on the front-lines of the Commonwealth's COVID-19 response face immediate shortages of the equipment necessary to keep them safe from contagion while caring for our community and anticipate shortages of ventilators for patients.

We recognize that with all the innovation in the Commonwealth, there are many creative people who are designing and fabricating alternatives to commercially-available N95 masks, face shields, test swabs, and ventilators.  While all of us desire to get solutions in the hands of our healthcare workers as quickly as possible, we also want to do the best we can to ensure these alternatives are providing a known level of safety.  We also want to assist in helping people to identify the most promising solutions with respect to both safety and potential production capacity.

With this in mind, please complete this section if you are looking for assistance with, or can provide assistance with:
    • Regulatory guidance
    • Feasibility testing (e.g., particle flow, air flow)
    • Materials guidance
    • Certification/validation testing companies

    Massachusetts COVID-19 Manufacturing Capacity Index

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has an urgent need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers. Hospital and health networks fighting on the front-lines of the Commonwealth's COVID-19 response face immediate shortages of the equipment necessary to keep them safe from contagion while caring for our community.

As part of a coordinated response between academic, industry, and government, we are indexing the Commonwealth's manufacturing capacity to produce critically-needed components. The M-ERT includes expertise in reviewing the efficacy of products developed through this initiative, with an eye towards ensuring the safety of healthcare workers on the frontline.
